Brighton Students

Ngo, Huyen Tram - Vietnam

A Levels: Physics, Maths, Further maths, Biology, Chemistry

Conditional Offer: University of Cambridge (AAAA including As in Physics and Further mathematics) to study Natural sciences (Physical)

“ Bellerbys College has helped me a lot with my application process. Mr. Corcut, Mrs. Pocock and all my teachers gave me really good advice in completing my personal statement, tips in interviewing process and a lot of others things. The college is very nice. The members of the staff here are really helpful, friendly and supportive. Moreover, I was given wonderful chances to meet different people from different countries, which is unique to an international college like Bellerbys. I have met a lot of new friends from all over the world here; they taught me many different things in different culture which I would never know if I were study in Vietnam. I want to become a physicist, who can invent and discover new things useful for people.”

Sogdiana Chukurova - Kazakhstan

A Levels: French, Economics, History, Russian

Conditional Offer: University of Cambridge (AAA in any of the 4 A levels) to study Modern Languages (French) with Education Studies

“Bellerbys helped me with the application process by giving some instructions on how to fill in the application forms for Cambridge (and for UCAS), and also the college had sent off the documents to university. Teachers here are great and the international environment of the college is exciting. My life has become more independent here which is good. And in the future I plan to work for the Kazakhstan government, so it’s an interesting experience at Bellerbys learning more about other cultures. My friends and family are very happy for me and proud of the fact that I’m studying in the UK, but they miss me!”

Wan Shuk Wun (Agnes) - China

A Levels:  Maths, Further Maths, Economics and Chemistry

Conditional Offer: University of Cambridge ( AAA) to study Law

“The College helped organize Oxbridge Meetings regularly to help those aspired students to familiarize with the application process and all the related matters such as application requirements, interviewing techniques, past interviewing questions, selection criteria and most important of all, the college provided chances for students to present themselves on topics related to their subject application in the meetings. I would recommend the College to those students who aspire to get admitted to prestigious UK universities after completing their secondary education in Hong Kong. Bellerbys really provides good opportunities to those determined students to move up in their study path and fulfill their aspirations. Life here requires one to grow up and learn to be independent. Once the adaptation or transition period is over, students will enjoy the independence and maturity that they have acquired during the experience. Life in one’s home country is easier, but lacks challenge and exposure. I love the history, cultural elements and the individual space that can be found in UK.”

Ban-Ruo Andy Li - China

A Levels: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry & Economics

Conditional Offer: Trinity College, University of Cambridge  ( AAA in Maths, Further Maths & Physics) t o study Computer Science

“ Bellerbys College provides a one hour Tutor Group session every week to all students. My tutor, Dr. Cameron has been particularly helpful; he guided me and my fellows through our UCAS applications and provided all of us lots of useful information and helpful advices. The specialty about Bellerbys is the once-every-week Oxbridge meeting hosted by the programme manager Mr. Corcut. All Oxbridge prospective students in Bellerbys gather together, talk about recent affairs and express our own perspectives. This is an excellent and unique platform to prepare for the "tricky" Oxbridge interviews in December. Unlike public schools in the UK, Bellerbys does provide a lot of support in studies to students at the beginning of their courses and this is found most useful by new foreign students who are not familiar with the language, with the British education systems and with the culture. Teachers in Bellerbys are not only committed to helping students acquire enough As to go to a good University, they are, more importantly, committed to teaching students the learning methods they need at university. In this sense, Bellerbys really provides a thoughtful and caring Preparation for University Education.

I love British people, first of all. Most of them are very nice, kind and helpful. No matter how poor your language skill is, once they realise you're trying to say something, they're always patient to listen and sort out your problems. Unlike most of the people on this planet, I love British food too! I enjoy having Fish 'n' Chips, cottage pies, Angus beef burgers and etc. In fact I occasionally cook British food at my host family too!”

Cambridge Students

Peng Yang - China

A Levels: Business, Economics, Maths, Psychology, Accounting

Conditional Offer: New Hall College, University of Cambridge (AAA + IELTS 7) to study Environment, Economics and Law.

“New Hall is a girl’s college, close to Fitzwilliam College. Bellerbys College has helped me because the teachers have helped. My maths teacher has helped me by giving me past exam papers to study. The teaching here is very good – especially my economics teacher! I may stay here after my degree for a few years then back to my country.”

Ning Xiao - China

A Levels: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry

Conditional Offer: Churchill College, University of Cambridge (AAA) to study Chemical Engineering

“I am from the western part of China and I’m studying all the science subjects here at Bellerbys. I was offered by Cambridge ‘Engineering’ as my degree because I wasn’t completely sure about the subject I wanted to follow, but I get to choose my specific subject in the second year. It was a generous offer and my offer is only for three A’s at A Level – and I don’t have to do any special extension papers. Churchill is quite modern and has very good sports facilities. I like sports but I’m not good at it, so I always do something related like being the Manager, or even a cheerleader. Once I was even the referee! The reputations of the teaching staff at Churchill are very high. As an independent international school, Bellerbys is very high in the rankings in the UK and has very good academic results for students and with university placement.”

Yin Zhang - China

A Levels: Maths, Further Maths, Physics & Computing

Conditional Offer: Girton College, University of Cambridge (AAA) to study Mechanical Engineering.

“I am very interested in Electronic Engineering and my interview at Girton was quite long. It lasted about an hour. I wore a suit and was quite nervous. When I returned in January they gave me my offer. I think they were pleased too. At Bellerbys you can really practise your English which is very useful before you start your degree. You also learn about cultures and customs. I have friends form around the world now. My family back home are very pleased when I tell them that I will go to one of the best universities in the world. I went to one of the best universities in China, but now I’m going to one of the best in the world.”

Nguyen Thi Thu Ngan - Hai Phong , Vietnam

A Levels: Economics, Politics, Psychology, Maths, Further Maths

Conditional Offer: St. Catherine’s College, University of Cambridge (AAA) to study Economics

“I’m studying at Bellerbys College Queens Campus and I’m from a city called Hai Phong, near the capital, Hanoi. I went for an interview at St. Catherine’s. Before the interview I was very nervous, but once I got to the interview my confidence was high and I answered everything really well! The teacher allowed me to talk about UK Economics. I thought it would just be about my personal statement, but in fact it was quite academic. At the end of the interview, the teacher said that if I keep my confidence like this, I will do well at the next stage of interviews. It’s been quite a big journey for me, but my home city is quite like Cambridge so I adapted well. Studying at an international college like Bellerbys College is very helpful because the teachers know the difficulties you face as an international student, like language and living. The students experience the same things and it’s very useful meeting students from different cultures. I had never talked to a Russian girl before but now I have Russian friends.”

Chuk Pak Ning (Ian) - Hong Kong

A Levels: Maths, Politics, Economics

Conditional Offer: Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge (AAA) to study Economics

“ Hughes College is for mature students and they have to be over 21. The culture here is really different. The food, the transport and the language. When I first arrived at Bellerbys I could only speak a few words of English. I think my IELTS was about 5, but now it’s 7. Hughes have asked me for IELTS 7.5 overall. So every element should not be lower than 6. I’ve made lots of friends from different parts of the world. It’s really broadened my horizons – they way they live in their own country. Bellerbys has benefited me most with the English language. The atmosphere and environment here is great. Teachers are very happy to help you with extra work. I would say they are very dedicated. I am determined to become a politician in my future career. I really want to engage in the Chinese political system, but in Chinese politics you have to join the Communist Party, which contradicts what I believe, so I am determined to become a politician in Hong Kong.”

Yuki Kato - Nagoya, Japan

A Levels: Further Maths, Politics, Economics, Sociology

Conditional Offer: Trinity College, University of Cambridge (AAA) to study Economics

“The interview was quite difficult. A lot of the questions were very specific and they asked about things that I hadn’t studied before. I got stuck sometimes. I chose Trinity College because when I first went there I felt something, like an instinct. I felt it was a good college for me. It has a great reputation too. I really like this city. It’s comfortable, peaceful and quiet. The atmosphere is very good for people who want to study. Japanese cities are very crowded but here it’s different. There are lots of parks in the UK! I think attitudes here are very different. People here are very friendly, but too friendly sometimes. It’s good, but Japanese people are different. They are much more reserved. And the relationships with older people in Japan are different too. Bellerbys College has had a positive effect on me. I have made friends with people from lots of different countries.”

London Students

Julia Mitryaeva - Russia

A Levels: Economics, Math, Accounting & Psychology

Conditional Offer: London School of Economics to study Philosophy and Economics

“From the very beginning, back in Russia, I was told about LSE which specialised in my subjects: Philosophy and Economics, so I decided to try my best to get in there. The combination of my subjects is unusual but I have the opportunity to mix subjects. There’s the science of economics, and with Philosophy there’s the opportunity to extend your thoughts and create something new. These two subjects aren’t the same but they can help explain the behaviour of people. Bellerbys has helped me to understand lots of different cultures. I know a lot now about different traditions now. My parents are happy (I’m here) because of my results and also because I have some clear aims now. I live in the Docklands. The view at night is amazing. I can see Bellerbys College from my balcony!”

Cheng Fang-Yuan (Celia) - Shanghai

A Levels: Double Maths, Physics, Chemistry

Conditional Offer: University of Cambridge, Trinity College to study Engineering.

“I visited Trinity twice. I chose to do engineering there because I heard that Trinity was one of the best places I could do this. I want to do Civil Engineering eventually and after two years at Cambridge I can specialise. The subject is very large! My parents support me and my relatives are all very proud of me. I find people in the UK are very friendly and helpful. People in England are very talkative and compared to Shanghai, it’s very different.

Bellerbys College has a really relaxing atmosphere where the teachers are like your friends. I learn much better this way.”

Anna Linetskaya - Russia

A Levels: Maths, Psychology, Accounting, Economics

Conditional Offer: Kings College London (AAB) to study Business Management

“I visited Kings recently. I like the campus and the fact that it’s in the centre of London.

I am a kind of strange person in that I enjoy both maths and psychology, but I am planning to become a manager in my career so I think all four of my current subjects will prove very useful. Bellerbys provides opportunities, but of course it depends on how you take these opportunities. For students who want opportunities – they are definitely there at Bellerbys College. Teachers here will help you with every problem or question you have. The tutors really are brilliant. My family missed me a lot, but then they took action and decided to move to Europe too. They’re in Germany now which is much better. I lived in the Bellerbys residence for a year, but now I rent a flat just five minutes from the school at Millennium Quay – which is very useful.”

Tran Hoang Long - Vietnam

A Levels: Double Maths and Physics

Unconditional Offer: Imperial College London to study Computing (Software Engineering)

“ICL is my first I think Imperial is the best college to got to. I would like to be a game designer. I used to do some programming but now I have to study too much! Bellerbys College is the place to go to because there are only a few students per class. In another college you will have 30-50 students per class, but here it’s sometimes only two to three students. My teacher helps me and knows about my progress – in fact they become your friends. If your English choice because the rankings appealed to me, and the reputation. For computer science language is not that good, Bellerbys is great because here, teachers not only help you to get to the college you want, but they also help you with your English – and other colleges cannot do that.”

Dinara Dyussenova - Kazakhstan

Foundation Programme: Engineering

Conditional Offer: University College London (Foundation 70%) to study Maths & Management

“My IELTS level is now 6.5, but was 4.55 when I started here in September 2006! This is because of Bellerbys. I would say that Bellerbys is a good college because it can help you get to the best universities. The teaching quality is very high and there is a lot of other support here for international students. The environment here is different but I like it. I like the classical education available in England. I visited UCL where I had an interview and was impressed.”

Oxford Students

Shun Yik Pang (Jennifer) - Hong Kong

A Levels: Economics, Psychology, Maths & Further Maths

Conditional Offer: Warwick (AAB) to study Finance & Accounting

“I’m interested in psychology. My chosen degree is Finance & Accounting. I think the psychology will be useful for marketing. I hope to take up banking as a career. The teachers here at Bellerbys have really helped me. My teacher, Jackie, has even taught me English individually. I asked her if she could and she used her spare time to teach me – which I think is really nice. The teachers here have very high qualifications – some went to Oxford university and others have PhDs. People are friendly here in Oxford too. It’s a very classical city and I see hundreds of students every day from all the colleges and the university.”

back to the top of the page

Jun Liu (Jade) - Mainland China

A Levels: Accounting, Economics, Maths & Further Maths

Conditional Offer: Warwick University (AABb) to study Finance & Accounting

“The reputation of Warwick really attracted me. LSE and Warwick have the best reputations for my subject, I think, and the cities are both very suitable for studying in. The teachers here at Bellerbys Oxford have really helped me. Emma, my Accounting teacher, made different study plans for each individual student – explaining to us what we really needed to study. It’s great that she makes specific plans for us. So I think Bellerbys is a good choice for any international student. You make friends from different countries, you talk about different cultures and it’s all very impressive.”

Hang Qiao Bai ( Doris) - Northern China

A Levels: Accounting, Maths & Further Maths

Conditional offer: Southampton University (ABB) to study Mathematics with Finance

“ Southampton is my first choice and Loughborough is my insurance choice. I’ve had six offers altogether. Southampton - where I’ve applied for Maths and Finance - has asked me for an IELTS level of 6.5. I think I would like to work in the banking industry. Bellerbys has smaller classes than other schools which means the teachers can focus on the individuals. And my English has improved because Bellerbys provides us with a lot of lessons. My parents miss me but they feel I’ve become more independent. I’m more confident now and I can do most things for myself.”

back to the top of the page

Robert Kopaczyk - Polish/German

A levels: German, Maths, Physics, Psychology

Conditional Offer: Imperial College London (AAA) to study Computer Science

“I accepted Imperial as my firm offer. They offered me AAA, but this includes German A level which I already have. I visited Imperial and really liked it. In the interview, the tutor asked me one question and said that his question was very hard and he’d give me a few hints if I didn’t know it. So I thought for a while and then said to him, ‘I can’t solve this problem,’ and he said, ‘I can’t solve this either.’ It made me laugh and I very much liked that attitude. Some of the other colleges I visited didn’t appeal to me as much, but that is what visits are for. At Bellerbys we’re not just studying our subjects, we often debate other issues in class, across subjects from immigration to evolutionary psychology.”

back to the top of the page

Nguyen Hoang Giang - Vietnam

A Levels: Physics, Chemistry, Maths & Further Maths

Conditional Offer: University College London (AAB) to study Civil Engineering

“My interview at UCL went well. I had to work in a small group of about five or six people. We had to solve an engineering problem then present to the rest. Then after that I had a one-to-one interview with the tutor – which also went well. The tutor was very kind and I think I did quite well. Bellerbys is a very international school, so I had a good chance to join the international society here and learn about many other cultures. Even though Vietnam is close to China, I knew little about it until now. It’s the same with Kazakhstan. And the teachers here have definitely helped me to improve my English.”
